Visiting to an ancient temple of the 8th century gave me the glimpses of India’s past glorious history which was celebrated for its antiquity. Kapaleeshwar Temple, Chennai too is imparting the same historical glory of ancie India. The current form of the temple is the replica of the original one which was submerged in the sea. It was the contribution of several rulers of Tamil Nadu who built a number of architectural monuments and temples and this temple was the creation of the Pallavas in the 8th century.
We were clicking several images of the temple and its surroundings which are simply out of the world. The journey towards the divine soul was amazing and I could feel the inner joy of that meticulous moment which was engrossing me all over. The architecture of the temple is based on the style of Dravidians. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The ‘samadhis’ of several deities like Vinayagar, Chandikeshwarar, Murugar, Annamalaiyar, Saneeswara, Dakshinamurthy, Durgai are there in the temple which are worshipped with equal importance. There are also 63 idols of Saivite saints which are beautifully and flawlessly whittled in bronze. Lord Shiva was worshipped by these saints throughout their life. Inside the temple we could see the several idols of Hindu Gods. The temple is located in Mylapore, the name of which is derived from a legend, as said by the saints and ‘pandits’ of the temple. They said that in Mylapore, Goddess Parvati took the form of a beautiful peacock to get married to Lord Shiva, and peacock in Tamil language is called ‘Mayil’, from which the name of the place has been derived as Mylapore.
After having a peaceful expedition of the Kapaleeshwar temple, Chennai, I was spellbound for a while. Feeling a divine bliss, I was amazed at the notion of devotion of the people of the past and was thinking about their holistic approach and lifestyle and their great fidelity with their art, culture and Lord Shiva. The next spot to be visited was ‘Beyond the gates’, the famous book market in Chennai.
