The Se Cathedral church is truly a magnificent and awe – inspiring monument in Goa. The historical aspect of this ancient church allured me even more towards it. The interiors were so richly adorned with Portuguese architectural style engravings that I couldn’t help but have a high regard for the expert craftsmanship of the artisans of the bygone golden era. Hereafter it was time to take a deeper insight into the history of Goa. So we all headed towards the St Augustine Tower of old Goa.
This is one of the most popular and spectacular ancient monuments in Goa that attracts huge numbers of tourists from near and far off places. This prominent landmark located in the old Goa region has been innumerably mentioned in travel broachers and magazines related to Goa tourism. This tower goes up to a height of 46 metres.

It was part of a magnificent church and served as a belfry which was part of the facade of the ancient church. It felt like going back in time as we visited the ruins of this historic church.
The St Augustine’s tower is part of the St Augustine church which comprised of four such towers. The tower is enormously high and was initially built up using laterite rock. This four storied colossal structure is the main tourist attraction of the old Goa. The St Augustine church was built long back in the year 1602 by an Italian architect whose style has lived for time immemorial in the form of this massive structure.

There was a giant bell housed in the tower which was later on moved to the Church of our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in the year 1871. Unfortunately in the year 1931 half of the tower and the beautiful facade collapsed due to withering.
What remains today is just half of this sky reaching tower which is visited by history lovers from all parts of India as well as abroad. The St Augustine’s tower is still remnant of the giant and one of the most humungous monuments in Goa, i.e. the Augustinian Monastery. We clicked a lot of pictures and returned back to our hotel eager to explore more of the gems embedded in this beautiful historically rich state.
