Goa is a famous tourist destination and has a variety of attractions that allure tourists from all parts of the world. As I posted previously we visited the Anjuna beach in Goa which is famous for its hot water lakes and tall pine trees.
It was an amazing site as one can forget all his worries of the busy city life here. Hereafter we decided to visit the famous place of sanctity in Goa i.e. the Shri Shantadurga Temple in Ponda, Goa. I love to visit places which have unique architectural style and historical relevance. This was the perfect destination for me
The temples in Goa are very peculiar in their location, spaciousness and architectural style. They truly stand out as compared to other temples in India. The Shantadurga temple is located at Kavelem also known as Kapilpura in Goa.
It is one of the most pious and largest temples in Goa. This historic temple was built long back in around 1738 AD when Goa was under the rule of the Maratha king Shahu Raje. The presiding deity of this shrine is goddess Shantadurga who is a reincarnation of goddess Parvati. Goddess Shantadurga or Shanteri is considered as the deity of peace. The idol of Shantadurga is erected in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple in between the destroyer lord Shiva and the Preserver lord Vishnu.

A beautiful lake is housed in front of the tall structures that are meant to store oil for the religious rituals. When the lamps are lit in the evening and the sheen of the lamps illuminate the water of the lake this scene is truly spiritually reviving and devotees in large volumes come to visit the Shantadurga temple during this time.
The temple entrance is one of a kind as it takes visitors to a trance owing to the mellifluous notes that are played at the entrance. The dome that is built over the temple is very artistically carved and the detailed engravings on it depict the expertise of the artisans of the bygone era. Apart of the beauty of the temple the surroundings are also awe – inspiring. The lush greens and scenic beauty along with soothing atmosphere serve as perfect settings to this spiritual abode.
