A magnificent shrine which is erected over the tomb of St. Thomas is a mesmerizing white painted architectural building named as San Thome Church, Chennai. Located in the Mylapore region of Chennai, it shines with its own enlightened and holistic entity. The national shrine is built over St. Thomas’s tomb and it is known as St. Thomas Basilica. It attracts swarms of foreign and Indian tourists, local and outside pilgrims. It is probably a prominent reminder of Chennai’s colonial heredity and it depicts the history of St. Thomas’s voyage to India and initially it was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, but the British made more effort to rebuild this church in 1893. The daunting structure touches the height of 155 feet and originates peace and constructional splendor with its tall identity over the saint’s tomb. With the sea in the background, the immaculate pallid structure reveals sanctity to the visitors and pilgrims.
I could feel the sense of tranquility and my blessed soul was filled with inner joy and divine happiness. St. Thomas was one among the 12 apostles of Jesus and his holistic approach towards humanity was uncountable. It is said that his preaching were very much valuable and he was a true follower of Jesus Christ. The experience of visiting the church was as magnificent as the structure of the church and it was against our temperament to leave the pilgrimage, but we plunged towards the sea beach at the backdrop of the church to undergo some relaxing moments and gossips. We took some of the roadside snacks of which I was very fond of, and further we talked about our lives and their specialties. The holy visit to the church brought us to a segment where ultimate peace ranks as the priority and we were obliged and fortunate to have an expedition as such.
San Thome Church, Chennai made my meeting with the self successful and would last for a longer interlude. Next, it was time for catching up with some wildlife glimpses at the Guindy National Park and we headed towards the same.
