The Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad was built in the year 1562 under the rule of Ibrahim Qutub Quli Shah. The rulers of Hyderabad had this realisation that Hyderabad has always been a dry place. The summers in the region are intense and being in the Deccan plateau the region receives minimal rainfall.
The unpredictability of Hyderabad’s weather is such that it has faced major floods on several occasions. The city was always prepared for the natural disaster whether it is droughts or floods through the several artificial lakes and dams. The Hussain Sagar Lake and the Osman Sagar Dam are examples of such structures both built from the river Musi. The river Musi has been the major source of water for Hyderabad since ages.

We visited the Hussain Sagar Dam as the final part of our delightful journey to Hyderabad. The city had given us immense joy and we wanted to end on a high. The beautiful lake had a serene setting and clam waters. The cool wind blowing off its surface made us forget the hot weather that had prevailed during the trip. Although when I contemplate now the trip would have lacked authenticity if not for the true Hyderabadi summer experience.
The Hussain Sagar Lake has a number of resorts and lodges along its banks. House boats are also available for tourists at nominal costs. The city of Hyderabad is a modern city but throughout my trip I realised and observed that the workforce that supports the tourism industry of Hyderabad is constituted of simple Hyderabadi men and women who have pure and innocent hearts.

My trip to Hyderabad would not have been complete if I would have missed the boat ride with my friends on the Hussain Sagar Lake. The 5.7 km wide expanse of water welcomed us and the scenes of the large orange sun setting at the horizon were just phenomenal. Our souls were filled with comfort and new hope. The sun sets to rise again. All good things must come to an end for better things to begin. With this note we ended our journey in Hyderabad and started preparing for our journey back home.
