The next destination of our itinerary was the famous Guindy National Park located in the heart of Chennai Metropolis. Sanctuaries and parks always fascinate me as it gives a break from our daily chores of life and gives an opportunity to be in sync with nature. I had heard a lot of positive reviews about the Guindy National Park from fellow travelers and friends who had visited before.
I spent almost an hour and half sitting in the taxi amidst the traffic. The park boasts of one of the few national parks situated inside a city and it was true as personally I had visited many national parks however none of them were in city limits. I grabbed a pamphlet from the counter which revealed lot of information about the park. The Guindy National Park, with an area of 2.82 square km is the eighth smallest park in India and is attached to the grounds of the official residence of Governor of Tamil Nadu. As I entered the park I was welcomed by cool breeze and chirping of birds. It was simply amazing to see green woods, lakes and streams as I took a stroll inside the park. I saw few street vendors selling snacks and cool drinks inside the park.
The Park boasts of a diverse animal life and is home to more than 130 species of birds, blackbucks, jackals, deers, snakes, tortoise etc. I took pictures with my digital camera and the spotted deer gave me some classics shots. The park has dense thorn forests and dry scrub which receives good adequate of rainfall every year. I made way to the next two major attraction of the park, The Guindy Snake Park and Children’s Park. I had the privilege to see some really deadly yet beautiful reptiles including King Cobra, Vipers, and Pythons etc. The children’s park is an ideal destination for children who can don’t get enough space to play in a metropolis like Chennai. Guindy National Park was a great experience and an opportunity to be in harmony with nature. No wonder it attracts more the 700,000 tourists every year. Coming out of the park, it was time to have some calm and rejuvenating time at the banks of the Cooum River.
